Tyson’s Three Truths

• Personal

  • We can often define truth by personal experiences. Often experiences point to our perspective on the world. It’s also human nature to hold onto righteousness.

  • Admitting we are wrong takes courage.

• Objective

  • Regardless of how passionately we believe something, objective truths remain true. Science determines objective truths through the scientific method.

  • A systematic approach to using qualitative and quantitative data as evidence to prove something. If strong enough the truth is undisputed.

    • Ex: The Earth is round regardless of those who believe the Earth is flat.

• Political

  • Political truths can often be a symptom of culture in a given area of society. This can often coincide with personal truths if people make political affiliation their identity versus being an independent thinker.

Facts vs. Objective Truths

• Facts can support what is objectively true. But not all facts are objective truths. Facts can be used for all of Tyson’s truths, but does not garuntee objectivity.

• Cherry Picking

  • When people desire to be right, specific data can be used to affirm their position. However this is unsound reasoning.

    • Tyson believes in the power of science (scientific method) to consider all possible variables that can support or crumble a hypothesis. Science is objectively true because it considers all data to arrrive at a conclusion.

Be Mindful

• Can I still have personal truths. Yes, and know the difference between what you believe and objective truths. We can form opinions without arriving at a conclusion.

• There is more to know that may prove us wrong.

A Better Way Forward

• Objective truths can create acceptance in the world because undisputed information cannot be argued against.

• More common ground within personal truths. Acknowledging all sides to every story.

  • School

  • Media/Technology
